What counts as an abnormal load?

An abnormal or oversized load is anything that goes beyond the standard legal limits a normal truck and trailer can carry — whether that's because it is too wide, too tall, too long, or too heavy, and it can't simply be split into smaller units. Because it can't be loaded like general cargo, it needs the right equipment and the right permissions.

Permits and escorts

Moving an abnormal load on Kenyan roads generally requires special authorisation from the relevant roads authorities, and the largest or widest loads may need escort vehicles to move safely alongside other traffic. Arranging this correctly is part of the job — it keeps the move legal and keeps everyone on the road safe.

Route planning matters

An oversized load can't always take the most direct route. Low bridges, narrow sections, roundabouts, overhead cables and weight-restricted structures all have to be considered in advance. A proper route survey before the move avoids nasty surprises on the day.

The right equipment

Abnormal loads are moved on specialised trailers — low-beds and extendable trailers, for example — matched to the shape and weight of the cargo, with correct securing and load distribution. Getting this right protects both the cargo and the vehicle.
